In today’s social media landscape, platforms like Instagram often portray a distorted version of reality, with users presenting an idealized image of themselves, perpetuating unrealistic standards and constant happiness. Recognizing this issue, BeReal emerged as a solution. Launched in 2020 by Alexis Barreyat, BeReal aims to revolutionize social media by offering an authentic glimpse into people’s lives at any moment, free from the extensive editing and image manipulation typically associated with apps like Photoshop or Snapchat filters. Despite this app peaking in popularity in 2022, it still has quite a fair user base.
What is the BeReal. app like?
The BeReal app is really easy to use. It boasts a user-friendly interface that’s both intuitive and somewhat visually appealing. The app is easy to navigate and doesn’t have tons of options like other social apps. Therefore, if you aren’t tech-savvy you should still be able to use it effortlessly. It is also ad-free thanks to it being currently funded by investors. However, this doesn’t mean that it won’t change in the future.
How does the app work?
The app operates by prompting its users randomly throughout the day to embrace authenticity, a feature known as “Time to BeReal.” Users receive a notification and have a brief two-minute window to share what they’re currently engaged in. During this time, the app captures photos from both the front and rear camera of the device. Any post made after this two-minute window is marked as “late.”
This unique approach encourages some users to post promptly and be genuinely themselves. However, there’s flexibility for those who prefer to share later in the day due to more exciting activities. I think for them to accommodate this, the app introduced the “Bonus BeReal” feature. This feature incentivizes on-time posting by allowing users to make two additional posts if they adhere to the initial two-minute window which means they get more photos in their memories.
In my opinion, this bonus BeReal feature is a valuable addition as it provides users with a compelling reason to continue embracing authenticity even after the initial novelty wears off. Even if users opt not to post on time, the absence of filters ensures that any content shared remains unaltered and authentic.
It’s worth noting that if a user is dissatisfied with their photo, they have the option to delete it and try again, but if they delete the post again they won’t be able to post again for that day. This mechanism encourages users to be thoughtful about what they share, reinforcing the app’s commitment to genuine and unfiltered moments.
What time does the app go off?
Depending on where in the world you are, there are four BeReal times: Europe, Americas, East Asia & West Asia. The app will automatically place you into the correct one depending on where you are. As this review is being written from a perspective of being in the Europe time zone. Where I live, it tends to go off as early as 8am and as late as up to 11pm. This will vary because there are some different time zones in each zone. If you want to see the past time history in your time then I recommend this website as it has indepth history of each zone.
What should you know about the privacy settings?
As of August 2023, BeReal only allows you to share your posts to either just your friends or your friends + their friends. Therefore, only a small amount of people should be able to see your posts compared to when the app used to have a global share feature. Also, users can pin 3 posts to their profile for their friends to see until they remove them.
When it comes to how the app handles your data, I’ve included a link to ToSDR, which stands for “Terms of Service; Didn’t Read.” ToSDR is a community-driven project with a mission to assess and grade the terms of service and privacy policies of popular internet platforms. They’ve assigned BeReal a Privacy Grade D, with A being the highest and E the lowest. While BeReal’s D grade isn’t the best, it’s also not as concerning as platforms like Facebook, YouTube and other big platforms.
It’s important to note that BeReal, being developed in France, adheres to strict European Union regulations regarding data collection from EU-based technology users. The link below will provide you with detailed insights into what often goes unnoticed in these policies. Armed with this knowledge, you can make an informed choice about whether to use the app or explore other options.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I find the concept of this app truly appealing. Its unique approach to promoting authenticity by encouraging spontaneous, unfiltered sharing is a breath of fresh air in today’s world of meticulously curated content. The added flexibility of the “bonus BeReal” feature, alongside the assurance that no filters can be applied, demonstrates a thoughtful and user-centric design. All in all, this app’s concept resonates with those who want social media to be full of natural things.
