Google Pixel 6 Pro Review 2024: Cutting-Edge Marvel or Frustrating Fiasco?

Introduction

In this article, I will start off by mentioning what this device is supposed to offer, but if you want to skip that and read my personal experience and if I recommend this device or not you will find it near the bottom of the article.

The Google Pixel 6 Pro arrived in late 2021, promising to revolutionise the smartphone market with its “advanced features” and “cutting-edge technology”. In this review, we’ll explore its design, display, performance, camera capabilities, battery life, software experience, and overall value in 2024.

Design & Build Quality

The Pixel 6 Pro boasts a sleek, modern design with premium materials. The glass back and aluminum frame provide a nice feel. The unique camera bar on the back sets it apart from other smartphones, while the curved edges and thin bezels give it a premium look.

Pros:

  • Built with premium materials
  • Distinctive design
  • Comfortable to hold

Cons:

  • Large size may not suit everyone
  • Very slippery without a case

Display

Featuring a 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, the Pixel 6 Pro offers an immersive viewing experience. The colors are vibrant, and the high resolution ensures crisp visuals, making it ideal for multimedia consumption and gaming.

Pros:

  • Stunning 120Hz AMOLED display.
  • Excellent color accuracy and brightness.
  • High resolution for detailed visuals.

Cons:

  • Slightly curved edges can cause accidental touches.
  • Curved screens are much likely to break when dropped (it happened to me).

Performance

The Pixel 6 series was the first series with Google’s custom Tensor chip, the Pixel 6 Pro delivers a very average performance. Some multitasking, gaming, and demanding applications run smoothly, showcasing that thisw chipset isn’t as good as its competitors.

Pros:

  • Mostly mooth and responsive performance
  • Good multitasking capabilities
  • Handles most apps with ease

Cons:

  • Tensor chip is unproven compared to established competitors.
  • It also seems to cause issues with the phone.

Camera

The camera system on the Pixel 6 Pro is one of its standout features. With a 50MP main sensor, 48MP telephoto lens, and 12MP ultra-wide lens, it captures stunning photos in various conditions. Google’s computational photography enhances images, ensuring excellent detail and dynamic range.

Pros:

  • Exceptional photo quality
  • Versatile camera setup
  • Impressive low-light performance

Cons:

  • Limited manual controls for photography enthusiasts

Battery Life

The 5003mAh battery in the Pixel 6 Pro provides nearly all-day battery life with moderate use. The addition of fast charging and wireless charging adds convenience for users on the go.

Pros:

  • Decent battery life.
  • Fast and wireless charging support.
  • Adaptive battery settings.

Cons:

Software & Features

Released with Android 12, but is able to run Android 14, the Pixel 6 Pro offers a clean and intuitive user experience. The integration of Google’s services and exclusive features like Magic Eraser and live translation enhance the usability of the device.

Pros:

  • Smooth and clean Android experience
  • Exclusive Google features
  • Regular (monthly) software updates

Cons:

  • Some features may not be immediately intuitive

Is It Value For Money? Then & Now

When the Pixel 6 Pro was released, it was priced competitively for a flagship device, the Pixel 6 Pro offers underwhelming value for its features. While it “competes” with other high-end smartphones, its unique offerings and Google’s software integration make it a compelling choice.

Pros:

  • Competitive pricing for a flagship
  • Google’s ecosystem integration

Cons:

  • Better competition from other flagship devices

In 2024, I would say now that it is cheaper some may find that it is “value for money” but it’s important to remember that this year it will get its last major android update.

My Experience With The Pixel 6 Pro

I bought the Google Pixel 6 Pro in April 2022, excited to experience the latest innovations from Google. However, my excitement quickly turned to frustration when I encountered a power issue. Whenever I restarted the device, it wouldn’t turn back on, claiming it had 0 percent battery and when powered on it would boot up but then shut down immediately. This issue rendered my phone unusable until it was placed into tge charger again.

By summer 2022, I decided to send the device off for repair, reporting the power issue and an additional problem with the microphone not working on certain apps. Upon receiving the device back, I was pleased to find that the power issue was resolved. The microphone issue also seemed to be fixed initially.

Unfortunately, this relief was short-lived. The microphone problem reappeared intermittently. Sometimes, contacting support and following their troubleshooting steps would temporarily fix the issue. However, as of 2024, these troubleshooting steps no longer work. The microphone fails to function on the dialer app, Telegram, and other similar applications, although it works fine on Snapchat and the camera app.

Given these recurring problems, I contacted support twice more, only to be told that my device needs to be sent off for repair again. This time, however, it is out of warranty, and the repairs would incur a cost. This series of issues has severely eroded my trust in Google. I am disappointed that a flagship device from a major tech company would be riddled with such problems. As a result, I refuse to pay any money for further repairs, feeling let down by Google’s product reliability and customer support.

Conclusion

The Google Pixel 6 Pro is a standout flagship smartphone, offering underwhelming performance, a stunning display, and an impressive camera system. However, my personal experience with persistent hardware issues and inconsistent support has significantly impacted my overall perception of the device. While the Pixel 6 Pro has the potential to be a top-tier smartphone, these unresolved problems and the additional repair costs post-warranty have been major drawbacks.

Despite its many strengths, the recurring issues have diminished the trust I once had in Google’s flagship series. If you’re considering the Pixel 6 Pro, be aware of these potential problems and weigh them against the device’s benefits. For me, these ongoing issues overshadow the positives, making it difficult to fully endorse the device, which is why I will be moving to another brand unless Google compensate for their incompetency appropriately.

Rating: 3/5 (Still seems generous)

Final Thoughts: While the Google Pixel 6 Pro excels in many areas, my experience with hardware failures and inadequate long-term support has left me wary. If reliability and consistent support are crucial for you, consider these aspects carefully before investing in this device.
